In a radical privacy policy shift, Google announced today that it will begin tracking users across all services—email, Search, YouTube and more—sharing information with no option to opt out. The change was announced in a blog post today, and will go into effect March 1.

What. The. Actual. Fuck!?

Reading through what they will be implementing as their new “Privacy” Policy, and it is disgusting.

They will be collecting:

-Device Information: Things like your operating system version and phone number which they can link back to your Google account (in which is often included your full name, phone number, credit card information, and picture).

-Log Information: Your I.P. address, what your searched for, your hardware settings, the time and dates of calls, and unique cookies that can link them to your Google account.

-Location Information: They can trace the GPS signals, Wi-Fi access points, and cell towers to find out where exactly in the world you are at any given time!

-Local Storage: Personal information stored locally on your cell phone or computer using web storage or data caches.

And much more - this is just a small summary with a few key examples.

On this page they state that the information will never be used without your permission, except in, and I quote, “rare circumstances like valid legal requests”So imagine if SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, or OPEN are put into effect.  You download one episode of that obscure anime that you couldn’t pay money for if you tried, and they’ll know everything about you.  And they will give it to the authorities upon request.

I recommend reading the Policy yourself and seeing what you make of it.

Title: What I like About You
Music: 80s Romantics
People: Karen & the Babes (Karen Gillan, Matt Smith, Arthur Darvill)
Description: The members of Karen & the Babes being their adorable hipster selves behind the scenes of Doctor Who.
Notes: I know loads of people have done these sorts of vids already, but I had to give it a hand myself. This was a bittersweet experience, given that DWC has been axed and now with the news of Karen and Arthur departing from DW next season. Still, it was loads of fun to make, and I hope you guys enjoy it. :)

Quote
"Let me go, no, I must go tonight because it does not feel as if I have lost. You feel as though we are the very breath you ache for, because you have so much more to live; I have been only a small fraction of time to you, an exciting and fleeting affair, but I have already had you for an entire lifetime. Knowing that you are willing give, to love the beast that is my shadow, I have already lived all I that need."

I had to put this quote somewhere because I loved it so much.

NaNoWriMo Newlyweds

lettersandlight:

Sometimes we get emails that are so good we just can’t keep them to ourselves. This email from Jonny in Brighton is one of those. We post it here with his kind permission.

Dear all at the Office of Letters and Light,

In 2009, prompted by a customer at Borders in Leeds, UK, where I worked at the time, I signed up to NaNoWriMo.org for the first time. Not four days into my time looking around the forums, gathering ideas for my first novel and checking out other people’s synopses, I received some NaNoMail from a Bay Area, CA resident named Kristina Casto who was looking for overseas writing buddies and a chance to share her previous three years’ NaNo experience. We got talking on MSN messenger and shortly after on Skype, and soon realised we had much more in common than we thought. By the time NaNoWriMo 2009 was over, Kristina already had plans to visit me in the UK, and we knew we were looking at something special. (Incidentally, I still want to finish my novel from that year, which involved a religion based around the music of David Bowie. It’ll happen one of these days.)

The future of reading (and Pottermore)

Lately, I have been interested in the boundaries and the in-betweens of many mediums, especially between the visual and the written word.

Actually, I’ve been playing ‘Pottermore.’

However, I admit the arts/literary part of me has overwhelmed even the fan part. Pottermore has been described as a new ‘online reading experience’ for the Harry Potter books. The idea of it is fascinating, especially as the (moving!) visuals are beautiful- and more. It is interactive and user-responsive (like who will win the House Cup).

Only after seeing Pottermore, I started to really see what reading in the future will be, or could be. Will we start to see books in the form of websites, with words, images, and interaction all intertwined? Will the animation be as core to the reading as the words? Will reading become more and more of an ‘experience’? I would LOVE to be involved in a project like that, nor have I seen one similar before, or as close to, Pottermore. And Pottermore is a start, but not yet even close to the kind of thing I am imagining about right now.

What makes the issue interesting is that JK Rowling has the resources and fanbase. Should she choose to, she could literally *take* the masses to new forms of publishing and reading (more than the ‘ebook’).

It will be interesting to see the positive and negative implications something like this will have- and already has- on reading and how we process information.

(extracted from a post I did elsewhere, so excuse me if I went all POTTERMORE101 on y’all)
